NHS Foundation Trusts are part of and committed to the NHS but have more freedom in how they run their services and hospitals.

NHS Foundation Trusts are established as independent public benefit organisations. They are ‘owned’ by the local communities they serve, with local accountability being held by patients, colleagues and members of the public, including Trust Members.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is managed by our Board of Directors. The Board is responsible for the management of the Trust, and with input from the Council of Governors and Non-Executive Directors, sets the direction for the future of our organisation. 

Our Trust Members and hospital colleagues directly elect representatives to serve on our Council of Governors, which hold to account the Board of Directors and appoint the Chair and Non-Executive Directors. 

The National Health Service Act 2006 (the 2006 Act) as amended by the Health and Social Care Act 2012 (the 2012 Act) requires Foundation Trusts to have a constitution in accordance with Schedule 7 of the 2006 Act.

The Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s constitution, and any change to it, must be approved by the Council of Governors and the Board of Directors.  Any changes that affect the powers and duties of the Council of Governors also require further approval by the Trust’s Membership at its Annual Members’ Meeting.
