Microbiology
You will have a general introduction to good laboratory practice related to a clinical microbiology department which includes:
- Observing specimen reception process to include sample receipt and processing.
- Observe Associate Practitioner technical tasks including molecular assays.
- Observe Microbiology Specialist Biomedical Scientist role including reading culture plates, antibiotic susceptibility testing and direct microscopy.
- Discuss Biomedical Scientist role with training officer(s) to understand the route qualification.
This work experience happens over two days (a Tuesday and Thursday).
Please note: Applicants must be at Post 16 and the department can only support a maximum of two work placement students per day.
Blood Sciences
During the work placement, you will be able to:
- Observe specimen reception process.
- Observe Associate Practitioner sample checking, loading, technical tasks.
- Observe Haematology/Blood Transfusion Biomedical Scientist.
- Observe Biochemistry Biomedical Scientist.
- Discuss Biomedical Scientist role with training officer(s) to understand the route qualification.
This one-day placement is available on either A Tuesday or Thursday from 9am until 5pm.
Please note: Applicants must be post 16 and the department can only take one placement student per day.
Dental Labs
This is a great opportunity to learn Orthodontic and Maxillofacial aspects of Dental Technology.
Experiences may include:
- The Model casting process, use of the Model grinder, acrylic resin processing, acrylic resin trimming, welding and soldering.
- This placement will be over three days (Tuesday to Thursday) and available from September to June.
Please note: Students who undertake this work experience must be enrolled and attending Sheffield College on the BTEC National Diploma in Dental Technology.
